As you enter your 60s and beyond, you’ve reached a significant milestone. Maybe you’re enjoying retirement, an empty nest, or checking off bucket list items. Or perhaps you’re facing health challenges, financial struggles, or emotional battles.
The world suggests happiness comes through exercise, travel, and social connection. But as believers, we’re called to something deeper.
Learning from Caleb
At 85, Caleb boldly claimed his promised inheritance: “I’m as strong as I was when Moses sent me out. I’m as energetic to go out to fight now as I was then” (Joshua 14:10-12, MSG). After decades of waiting, his passion for God’s promises remained undiminished!
Jesus said, “Your heart will always be where your treasure is” (Matthew 6:21, MSG).
Ask yourself:
- What promises from God matter most to me now?
- What do I truly cherish above everything else?
If your answer isn’t Jesus, any happiness you find will quickly fade.
Five Pathways to Lasting Joy
1. Be truthful about what you value
Examine how you spend your time, money, and thoughts. These reveal your true treasures.
2. Know Jesus more deeply
Use this season to study Christ intentionally. Make learning about Him your daily delight.
3. Live in God’s love
“Look at how great a love the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children” (1 John 3:1, MSG). Let His delight in you become your foundation.
Remember that God oversees every aspect of your life—nothing touches you without passing through His loving hands.
4. Retool, don’t retire
Use your wisdom and experience to serve others. If health limits physical service, become a prayer warrior—an equally powerful ministry.
5. Set your sights on Heaven
Think often about your eternal home. Let this anticipation fill your daily life with hope and purpose.
True joy comes not from worldly pleasures but from treasuring Christ, serving others, and anticipating heaven—happiness that even death cannot take away.
Go in Peace, Chuck
