I’ve seen enough Capital One commercials to know what’s in my wallet. But I often struggle with what’s in my head and heart. The great American climb to the summit of fame and fortune has robbed us of joy, happiness, and peace, all while replacing these virtues with stress, anxiety and unreasonable expectations.
What if we were to STOP, on this Monday to recalibrate what matters to us most. Before you start thinking, oh boy, here we go again, hang on. I’m not drafting a BLOG on “3 short and easy ways to be more productive.” I’m asking each of us to stop and determine what really matters to you. Look at your calendar, and look at your checkbook. Look at your relationships and your browser history. Check out your playlists and the wish lists. Do you see a pattern in those contemplations? Are your focus, finances, fitness and future All pointing toward you?
One of my favorite artists is Lauren Daigle. Jenny and I listen to her album often. Every song is great, but my favorite is “FIRST.” It’s a powerful song that reverberates through the house when we turn it up a bit. The lyrics are simple. So simple that even the “hymns and only the hymns crowd” can appreciate it, as well.
It goes like this:
Before I bring my need, I will bring my heart. Before I lift my cares, I will lift my arms.
I wanna know You, I wanna find You. In every season. In every moment.
Before I bring my need, I will bring my heart. And seek You, FIRST.
Before I speak a word, Let me hear Your voice.
And in the midst of pain, Let me feel Your joy. I wanna know You. I wanna find You.
In every season, In every moment. Before I speak a word, I will bring my heart. And seek You, FIRST.
In your brief reflection, is it possible that recalibrating our hearts, calendars, check books and relationships might be needed?
If so, try Lauren Daigle’s lyrics above. Before we hit the floor running. Before we get after the urgent tasks of our lives, maybe we should “bring our heart, lift our arms and seek Him FIRST.”
Better than a money back guarantee, God’s promise to be your rock and your salvation is waiting for you…When you seek Him FIRST!
