I recently read (again) the story of Queen Esther from the Old Testament. Esther shares a fascinating story. The book of Esther tells a story of Jewish life under Persian rule. Esther is a Jewish heroine, that marries a Gentile king—an event that saves the Jewish people from destruction. The Book of Esther deals with issues that are our issues in 2024, whether we like them or not. The story forces us to think about racism, hatred, deceit, abusive power, and ethnic conflict.
Take time this week to read the story of Esther, found in ten brief chapters in your Bible. I personally enjoy reading the New Living Translation.
Here are 5 Lessons from the Biblical Account of Queen Esther:
- Courage in Adversity: Esther’s story exemplifies the power of courage in the face of adversity. Despite the risks, she stood up for her people and risked her own life to save them. This teaches us the importance of standing firm in our beliefs and taking action even when the situation seems dire.
- Trust in Divine Providence: The story of Esther underscores the theme of divine providence and how God can work through human beings to bring about His plans. It serves as a reminder to trust in God’s timing and guidance, even when things seem uncertain or overwhelming.
- Importance of Timing and Preparation: Esther’s strategic planning and timing played a crucial role in the success of her mission. This highlights the significance of wise decision-making, thorough preparation, and discerning the right moment to act in achieving our goals.
- Influence and Leadership: Esther’s influence as queen allowed her to advocate for her people and enact positive change. This teaches us about the impact of using our positions of influence for the greater good and standing up for justice, even in the face of powerful opposition.
- Faith and Obedience: Esther’s obedience to her cousin Mordecai and her faith in God’s guidance enabled her to navigate challenging circumstances with grace and wisdom. This emphasizes the importance of faithfulness, obedience to moral principles, and trusting in God’s plan, even when the path ahead seems uncertain.
In a world gone mad, leaders across the globe, beginning with this author, would be wise the heed the lessons of Queen Esther. May we be willing to listen to, and learn from God’s work in Esther’s life as we navigate our 21st Century lives.
Go in Peace, Chuck
