YOUR PURPOSE & PEOPLE

Ever feel like you’re spinning your wheels? Cranking out tasks, climbing the ladder, chasing the next big thing… but still feeling… empty? Like something’s missing?

You’re not alone. We’re all wired to crave meaning, to contribute something real to the world. But somewhere along the line, we often get it twisted. We start thinking our purpose is tied to our job title, our achievements, our to-do list.

And that, my friends, is a recipe for a soul-crushing existence.

But what if I told you that your purpose isn’t about what you do, but about what happens in people’s lives when you do what you do?

Stick with me, because this flips the script on everything you thought you knew about finding your place in the universe.

The Message: A Different Kind of Gospel

Eugene Peterson, the genius behind The Message translation, understood this deeply. He didn’t just translate words; he translated heart. He took ancient texts and made them pulse with fresh relevance for our modern lives.

And when you read the Bible through The Message, you start to see that God’s always been more concerned with transformation than transaction.

Think about Jesus. He wasn’t a CEO, a politician, or a five-star chef. He was a carpenter-turned- itinerant-preacher. And yet, everything changed because of what he did. He didn’t just preach sermons; he healed the sick, fed the hungry, comforted the brokenhearted.

His actions created something new in the world. He brought hope where there was despair, love where there was hate, forgiveness where there was guilt. THAT’S purpose. Not the label, but the impact.

Beyond the Resume: God’s Unexpected CV

Let’s look at some examples. Take Noah. Building an ark wasn’t exactly a glamorous career move. I mean, imagine updating your LinkedIn profile: Noah: Ark Architect. Skills: Shipbuilding, Animal Husbandry (managing over 2000 species), Weather Forecasting (unlicensed).

But think about what happened because he built that ark. Humanity survived. He was an instrument of God’s redemptive plan. That wasn’t just carpentry; it was world-saving.

Or how about Esther? She wasn’t trying to be a queen. She was just trying to survive. But when the time came, she risked her life to stand up for her people. Because of her bravery, a nation was saved from annihilation. Her actions created a legacy of courage and resistance.

Then there’s Ruth. A Moabite widow, an outsider. Gleaning in the fields to survive. Not exactly a path to greatness. But her loyalty, her love, her unwavering commitment…it led her to become part of the lineage of Jesus. Her actions created a ripple effect that changed the course of history.

These are hardly your standard “success” stories. None of these people were primarily concerned with career advancement, or amassing wealth, or building a personal brand. They were just trying to be faithful in the moment, responding to the needs around them. And in doing so, they stumbled intosomething far bigger than themselves.

So, What Happens When *You* Do What You Do?

Okay, so maybe you’re not building an ark or saving a nation. But what are you doing?

And more importantly, what’s happening in the lives of the people around you because of it?

Are you a teacher? You’re not just imparting knowledge; you’re shaping young minds, inspiring curiosity, fostering a love of learning.

Are you a parent? You’re not just changing diapers and packing lunches; you’re raising the next generation, instilling values, creating a safe space for your children to grow and thrive.

Are you a barista? You’re not just serving coffee; you’re providing a moment of connection, a warm smile, a little bit of joy in someone’s day. Even the smallest acts of kindness can have a profound impact.

The Message puts it this way (Matthew 5:14-16): ‘You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve set you up as light-bearers, shine! Shine, so that all who see your good work will praise your Father in heaven.’

See that? God isn’t hiding you. God isn’t waiting for you to get a better job or a bigger platform. God wants you to shine right now, in whatever you’re doing. Because your purpose isn’t about what you do. It’s about the light you bring, the hope you offer, the love you share. It’s about reflecting the “God-colors” into the world.

Unleashing Your Inner Light-Bearer

So how do we unlock this purpose? How do we become more intentional about the impact we’re having? Here are a few starting points:

Pay Attention: Start noticing the effect you have on others. How do people respond to you?

What problems do you seem to naturally solve? Where do you see needs that you’re uniquely equipped to meet?

Embrace Your Gifts: What are you naturally good at? What do you enjoy doing? Don’t dismiss your talents as insignificant. God can use your passions to make a difference.

Seek Connection: Talk to people. Listen to their stories. Ask them what they need. Purpose isn’t found in isolation; it’s found in relationship.

Act with Intention: Don’t just go through the motions. Approach every task, every interaction, with a sense of purpose. Ask yourself, ‘How can I make this a little better? How can I bring a little light into this situation?’

Remember, purpose isn’t a destination; it’s a journey. It’s not about finding the perfect answer; it’s about showing up, being present, and doing what you can with what you have. God doesn’t need you to be perfect; God just needs you to be willing.

Shine On

Your purpose isn’t a title or a task; it’s the ripple effect of your actions. It’s the love you spread, the hope you ignite, the change you inspire. So, go out there and do whatever it is that you do – and watch what happens. You might just be surprised by the extraordinary impact of your ordinary life.
