You Say

I’ve learned that there are times when the single best thought I have to share with the world are the lyrics of a song that I cannot get out of my head. Especially when every insecurity that you have is firing every bullet at you at supersonic speed.

Maybe you don’t have that kind of insecurity. Maybe you don’t offer yourself any negative talk. Maybe your life doesn’t jump up and down like an overactive EKG. But friend, my insecurities, negative self-talk and moments of anxiety can, at times swallow me up and suffocate me.

In a flash, I write something like that last paragraph and want so desperately to delete it and write about courage, valor and unshakeable faith. But that would be window-dressing. My soul is often restless, fearful, anxious and insecure. What horrible things for a real, honest to goodness large-church pastor to admit, right?

And then I listen to these words from Lauren Dagle’s song, “You Say”:

“I keep fighting voices in my mind that say I’m not enough
Every single lie that tells me I will never measure up
Am I more than just the sum of every high and every low?
Remind me once again just who I am, because I need to know

You say I am loved when I can’t feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
You say I am held when I am falling short
When I don’t belong, oh You say I am Yours
And I believe, oh I believe
What You say of me
I believe

The only thing that matters now is everything You think of me
In You I find my worth, in You I find my identity, ooo-oh

You say I am loved when I can’t feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
You say I am held when I am falling short
When I don’t belong, oh You say I am Yours
And I believe, oh I believe
What You say of me
Oh, I believe

Taking all I have and now I’m laying it at Your feet
You have every failure God, and You’ll have every victory, ooo-oh

You say I am loved when I can’t feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
You say I am held when I am falling short
When I don’t belong, oh You say I am Yours
And I believe, oh I believe
What You say of me
I believe

Oh I believe, yes I believe
What You say of me
Oh I believe”

You might want to sing along with this video that includes her lyrics.

Will you join me in rolling up all of those insecurities and worries and toss them in the trash today? I Believe!
