TONE – It’s becoming a more significant word and definition in my life.
Every organization, every family, every leader, every person has a NATURAL TONE. The challenge is setting your “tone” within the tune and the rhythms of the Divine.
When our tone is in tune with the what, when or where that the Divine has set before us, it is a great sound. When it isn’t? It’s a dumpster fire with screeching violins in the background.
Your tone is the ethos you carry with you. It is the radar you send off in your various roles that you fill. You set or accommodate the tone of your family, business, friendships or teams. You have a tone that you convey, in every single role you fill…every single moment of every single day. Your tone allows others to “feel and sense” your thoughts, assumptions, and attitudes. It is how we develop personal assumptions and we create certain beliefs about someone we don’t really know.
If your tone is a whiner, you will attract fellow whiners. You might find a glass half full kind of person that will attempt to invest in your tone and change its trajectory…but let’s face it, if your tone is poor, poor pitiful me, with a dash of Eeyore (think Winnie the Pooh) then your tone is a pain in the neck. Suck it up and change your tone.
If your tone is that you know everything that there is to know mixed with a heavy dose of terminal certainty, then your tone is akin to a barbed wire fence and that’s just not worth investing in.
If your tone is mean-spirited, intolerant and bullying, mixed with a pinch of sarcasm, meaningful relationships and meaningful conversations never really get off the ground.
If your tone is a learner, with hints of humility, kindness and grace, it will sound like the Band of Heaven as you tune your tone to His beat and the Divine rhythms of grace.
Please don’t hear me say that I have attained the proper tone in my life yet. So, I ask you to join me in learning to tune your tone in the rhythm of the Divine so we might all learn what that sounds like in our part of the world.
Go ahead! Check the tune of your tone. If it’s a bit pitchy and off beat, seek the sounds of the Creator and watch your day turn into a platinum selling, chart topping tone!
