4forFRIDAY January 15, 2021

January 15, 2021 by AChuckAllen

January 15, 2021 | READS, LISTENS, LEARNINGS, AND REVIEWS

Five years from now, you’ll be the same person you are today, other than the books you read, the places you go, and the people you meet.

I love to share good reads, learnings, listens, and reviews with friends and followers. So, thanks for joining me on my 4forFRIDAY BLOG. Each week, the 4forFRIDAYoffers recommended Reads, Listens, Learnings, and Reviews, only for your enjoyment. Thanks Again!

31 DAYS IN PROVERBS
Read One Chapter of Proverbs that corresponds with the day of the month. Join me in the New Living Translation each day in January. Start now and stay with it each day. Come on! Join in!

This is a GREAT MOVIE on Netflix:
The Professor and the Madman

This movie had me in tears, shocked, enlightened and thouroughly entertained. This is the story of the creation of the very first Oxford, English Dictionary. Starring Mel Gibson and Sean Penn, t
his true story is so good!

A Great Book that my Good Friend, Jim Hollingsworth Shared with Me: Believe in People: Bottom-Up Solutions for a Top-Down World

A surprising take on how you can help tackle the really big problems in society–from one of America’s most successful entrepreneurs.
People are looking for a better way. Towering barriers are holding millions of people back, and the institutions that should help everyone rise are not doing the job. Crumbling communities. One-size fits all education. Businesses that rig the economy. Public policy that stifles opportunity and emboldens the extremes. As a result, this country is quickly heading toward a two-tiered society.

An Incredible Tech Gadget that I’m Loving! CARPLAY

My truck is equipped with Apple Airplay and (if needed) Google Airplay. I love the fact that it will play everything from my iPhone, including read my textx and allow the simple use of handsfree Siri directives. This new device allows Apple Carplay to be used wirelessly via bluetooth!~ Total gamechanger!

A Gadget Addition that I LOVE! The Jabra Evolve 75

With no relief in sight from the ongoing Zoom Calls and meetings, including counseling and strategic planning, I needed an upgrade on the headset front. After a fair amount of research, I found the Jabra Evolve and absolutely love this simple, user-friendly headset that I use in the truck, the office and home. It’s not cheap, but it is the best addition to my workflow since the iPad Pro.

A Quote from John Adams

“I fear that in every elected office, members will obtain an influence by noise not sense. By meanness, not greatness. By ignorance, not learning. By contracted hearts, not large souls . . . There must be decency and respect.”

January 8, 2021 by AChuckAllen

I love to share good reads, learnings, listens, and reviews with friends and followers. So, thanks for joining me on my 4forFRIDAY BLOG. Each week, the 4forFRIDAYoffers recommended Reads, Listens, Learnings, and Reviews, only for your enjoyment. Thanks Again!

31 DAYS IN PROVERBS
Read One Chapter of Proverbs that corresponds with the day of the month. Join me in the New Living Translation each day in January. Start now and stay with it each day. Come on! Join in!

I Love this NETFLIX Show: The Chef’s Table

I love this unique and entertaining show. Don’t miss the show about “The Grey” in Savannah, GA. It’s a fascinating perspective and storytelling. The story of a former segregated bus station in Savannah, Georgia, and how Mashama Bailey pays homage to history as she puts a new spin on Southern food traditions.

A Really Good Novel from Randy Wayne White: Sanibel Flats

After ten years of living life on the edge, it was hard for former CIA agent Doc Ford to get that addiction to danger out of his system. But spending each day in Florida, watching the sun melt into Dinkins Bay and the moon rise over the mangrove trees, cooking dinner for his neighbor, and dispensing advice to the locals. Then Rafe Hollins appeared. How could Doc refuse his old friend’s request―even if it would put him back on the firing line…and change forever the life he’d built here on Sanibel Island? I think you’ll love this series. There are more than 26 books in this fun-filled series built around “Doc Ford.”

An Older but Awesome Documentary from Netflix:
“The Minimalists; Less is More”

They’ve built a movement out of minimalism. Longtime friends Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus share how our lives can be better with less. Can we learn to discover greater peace, while striving for less materialism?

A Really Good Article from Scott Sauls: Towards A Better Us In 2021

Desiring change for the person in the mirror, dreaming of a better version of ourselves, is a good thing. But how can we get there? In pursuit of an answer to this question, Scott has been contemplating Galatians 5:16-25. Here are his thoughts and reflections. This is a must read!

A Quote from Billy Sunday

“The Bible will always be full of things you cannot understand, as long as you will not live according to those you can understand.”

A Great Read to Assist in Your New Year Goal to Read More Scripture in 2021. “Pray the Bible” by Donald Whitney

Donald Whitney outlines a simple, time-tested method that can help transform our prayer lives: praying the words of the Bible. Praying the Bible shows readers how to pray through portions of Scripture one line at a time, helping us stay focused by allowing God’s Word itself to direct our thoughts and words.

A Reminder – DWELL – The single easiest way to Memorize Scriptures

This is so great. For a few dollars each month, this subscription service provides temporary tattoos, watch and phone wallpapers, cards and helps to memorize one power scripture every month.

A Really Solid Read: 3 Habits That Can Give Your Brain a Break to Restore High-Level Thinking

This is a good read, especially for folks that are working remotely or are assisting student learning remotely. Here’s a snippet:

The human brain is not meant to stay in “focused” mode for hours at a time. Prolonged attention to a single task can hinder its performance.

When your brain is active for a very long time, you’re actually blocking your access to the diffuse mode — a more relaxed state.

A Quote from David Whyte

“Inside everyone is a great shout of joy waiting to be born.”

4forFRIDAY December 4, 2020

I love to share good reads, learnings, listens, and reviews with friends and followers. So, thanks for joining me on my 4forFRIDAY BLOG. Each week, the 4forFRIDAY offers recommended Reads, Listens, Learnings, and Reviews, only for your enjoyment. Thanks Again!

A Great Little Joint: 101 Bagels

Bobby and I enjoyed coffee and brunch as we met at this little gem in Duluth, GA. He enjoyed what looked like a huge and amazing omelet, and I stuck with the blueberry bagel – YUM! I later got hungry and went for the kill with a blueberry muffin warm with real butter… bless my heart!

A Solid BBQ Joint in Lawrenceville: Foggy Bottom BBQ

The pulled pork and the chicken were awesome! Jenny enjoyed the sliders. The stew was good, but not great. I’d definitely return.

A Really Good Read: Preparing for Christmas

Rohr is an insanely brilliant writer, and with his unique perspective on the incarnation, he writes these short devotions with wit and wisdom. He is a Franciscan Monk, so if you are hung up on orthodoxy, avoid this one. “Advent is not about a sentimental waiting for the Baby Jesus,” Richard Rohr asserts. Advent is a time to focus our expectations and anticipation on “the adult Christ,” who challenges us to empty ourselves, to lose ourselves, to surrender. Rohr’s Scriptural reflections for Advent are the perfect preparation for the Christmas season.

A Netflix Series Worth Watching all Four Seasons: THE CROWN

Okay, so I might have lost the old man card. But as this series went on, I was captivated by how the English Monarchy could be so resilient. I think you’ll enjoy it!

A Family Health Essential: Finger Pulse Oximeter

ACCURATE AND RELIABLE – Accurately determine your SpO2 (blood oxygen saturation levels), pulse rate, and pulse strength in 10 seconds and display it conveniently on a large digital LED display.

A Quote from John Piper

“The “age-old enslavement of the fallen human heart” takes three forms: self-deification (“I will be my own god”), self-definition (“I will define my own essential identity”), and self-determination (“I will decide my own truth and my own morality, without deference to any authority outside myself”). “

A Christmas Event with a Twist: BLUE CHRISTMAS

Christmas can be difficult for so many people. Just the thought of not having a loved one with you through the holidays, or trying to work your way out of grief and anxiety is a challenge. That’s what “Blue Christmas” is a perfect, easy evening for you to join me at Sugar Hill Church in our Chaple at 7:00 pm. Music, Communion, Prayer and Ecouragement. November 29, 2020.

A Fun Listen with Lauren Daigle: Daigle Bites

This girl has such a cool voice and I think she’s th real deal. Subscribe and enjoy.

Another Action-Packed Novel from Clive Cussler: NIGHTHAWK

This is a simple, mindless, enjoyable read. I reasd it in two nights, but alwasy enjoy the series about NUMA. From the Galapagos Islands to the jungles of South America to an icy mountain lake many believe to be the birthplace of the Inca, the entire NUMA team will risk everything in an effort to avert disaster…but they may be caught in a race that no one can win.

A Gadget that I use Every Single Day: Grafton Pen from Everyman.com

I got the smaller, pocket sized pen. It writes like a dream, is virtually indistructable and feels good in your hand. While we have COVID-19 haging around, it’s always handy to have your own writing instrument and a pocket-sized field notes.

A Country Meal Worthy of Grandma! Matthew’s Cafeteria

This joint has been serving comfort food since before I was born (1955). I love it, but often forget about it. It’s not so much that the food is awesome, but that it’s just good. Good as in country friend steak, gravy, pole beans, mashed potatoes, corn bread and egg custard pie…Just bless the Lord!

A Quote from Theodore Roosevelt

“We must show, not merely in great crises, but in the everyday affairs of life, the qualities of practical intelligence, of courage, of hardihood, and endurance, and above all the power of devotion to a lofty ideal, which made great the men who founded this Republic in the days of Washington, which made great the men who preserved this Republic in the days of Abraham Lincoln.”

A Really Fun Place to Grab a Light Dinner: LaGarde American Eatery in Chamblee

Jenny and I grabbed a late lunch on a beautiful Fall afternoon at LaGarde and loved the whole vibe of this little joint in Chamblee. The outside seating and fire pit were a bonus, but the food was excellent. Don’t miss the pimento cheese appetizer, and I would get either the burger (that’s a lot of meat) or the fried shrimp po-boy (that’s a lot of shrimp.) If you are looking for something different than the typical chain, you’ll probably like LaGarde.

A Really Good Read for Our Times: Respectfully, I Disagree: How to Be a Civil Person in an Uncivil Time by Jim Denison

From one of my favorite authors, Jim Denison. Two out of three Americans consider civility to be a major problem in our country today. Only 7 percent say it is not a problem at all. It seems we are all fighting to be heard, but no one’s listening. Has our culture lost the art of civility?

A Fun Novel from Stephen Coonts; The Russia Account

The Russia Account, pits CIA officer Tommy Carmellini against a murderous international financial conspiracy that leaves a trail of death and corruption, extending from a small bank in Estonia to the highest reaches of the Kremlin and the halls of Congress—perhaps even to the CIA itself, putting Admiral Jake Grafton, the head of the CIA, in the crosshairs of an assassin.

A Really Great Brunch! Flavorich in Suwanee

I know food, and I love food. This little gem on Buford Highway has the best Chicken and Waffles on the planet! If you love shrimp and grits, well, this is your place! The menu isn’t huge, but the food is so stinking good!!

A Quote from Scott Sauls

“Christianity always flourishes most as a life-giving minority, not as a powerful majority. It is through subversive, countercultural acts of love, justice, and service for the common good that Christianity has always gained the most ground.”
