I don’t own much, but whatever I do have, I’d give it all away for one more chat with my Dad.
I started to write something super-sappy about Dad, but I decided to write my top ten things that Dad taught me (in no particular order). By the way, this list could change day by day, based on what I remember and based on my needs at the moment. My Dad taught me a lot of things. I can hear him say…
- Son, there are four things that you cannot hide in this life. 1) Money, 2) Ugly, 3) Stupid and 4) Fat. (Need I say more?)
- Son, If you never learn how to square up and frame a wall, you’ll never square up your life. (Hmmmmm?)
- Son, you’re not that much to look at, be sure to take her flowers. (I ain’t kiddin)
- Son, you can tell a lot about a man by what he keeps in his truck. (Dad never went anywhere without his Bible)
- Son, if you can’t lead children to Jesus, you’ll be a pitiful preacher.(Amen, Dad)
- Son, if you don’t lose that weight before your 40, you never will. (Ouch)
- Son, never trust lazy people and never become a lazy man. (Thanks Dad – It’s served me well)
- Son, always carry a pocket knife. You never know when you’ll need it. (Clearly this was pre 9/11 but he was right again)
- Son, there are three things that will cost you your career and your family. 1) Money, 2) Women and 3) Pride. (Good word, Dad)
- Son, Never get so busy that you stop fishing. (Dad didn’t follow this one, and sadly, neither have I)
