READ, LISTENS, LEARNING & REVIEWS

Here is Your 4forFRIDAY for August 20, 2021

I love to share good reads, learnings, listens, and reviews with friends and followers. So, thanks for joining me on my 4forFRIDAY BLOG. Each week, the 4forFRIDAYoffers recommended Reads, Listens, Learnings,
and Reviews, for your enjoyment.

A Brief Article that Every Believer Should Read: Rest in God’s Faithfulness, Not Yours

Think about this. The One who created and controls the world, the One who is the ultimate definition of what is loving, true, and good, and the One who alone has the power to finally defeat sin has chosen, because of his grace, to wrap his arms of faithful love and protection around you, and he will not let you go. You can take your life off your shoulders because God has placed it on his. This doesn’t mean that it doesn’t matter how you live, but that your security is not found in your faithfulness, but in his.

One of the Most Significant Books that I’ve Read in my Lifetine: The Magna Carta of Humanity: Sinai’s Revolutionary Faith and the Future of Freedom

It’s not light reading, but it is so incredibly insightful. What a perfect picture of where America is today!
In these stormy times, loud voices from all fronts call for revolution and change. But what kind of revolution brings true freedom to both society and the human soul? Cultural observer Os Guinness explores the nature of revolutionary faith, contrasting secular revolutions such as the French Revolution and the faith-led revolution of ancient Israel. He argues that the story of Exodus is the highest, richest, and deepest vision for freedom in human history.

A Candy So Good, You’ll be Shopping at the SuperMercardo: SUPER TURRON SUPERCOCO ALL NATURAL COCONUT CANDY

Sugar Hill Español gifted me a basket of Latin Goodies last week and this was a sweet treat! I think you’lll love it! A sweet, but natural snack imported from Columbia

A Great Business Read: Everyday People, Extraordinary Leadership: How to Make a Difference Regardless of Your Title, Role, or Authority

A book about leadership for people who are not in formal or hierarchical leadership positions, Everyday People, Extraordinary Leadership provides readers with a comprehensive and practical approach to addressing leadership challenges, no matter the setting or circumstance. Esteemed scholars and sought-after consultants Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner adapt their trademark The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® framework to today’s more horizontal workplace, showing people that leadership is not about where you are in the organization; it’s about how you behave and what you do.

Everyday People, Extraordinary Leadership draws on the authors’ deep well of research and practical experience to cover key subjects:

  • The essence of making a difference in any role, setting, or situation
  • The difference between positions of authority and leadership
  • The importance of self-development in leadership development

A Powerful Quote from RUMI

If the house of the world is dark,
Love will find a way to create windows.

A New, Very Cool Weather APP: WEATHERSTRIP

It’s simple and elegant. Just the info you need when and how you need it. I think you’ll like the scrolling timeline and simplicity when you just want to know the facts without all the “stuff.”

A Great Read: The Power of a Graceful Leader by Alexsys Thompson

The awareness of the division that exists within you and the roles you play creates space for your inner voice. This inner voice is seeking your attention and hinting there is a better, easier way of leading and being. In The Power of a Graceful Leader, Alexsys Thompson shares how to begin integrating who you are and how you lead. Through her experience with this disconnect in her own leadership and having coached hundreds of leaders in their integration journey, Alexsys offers tools, tenets, and some relatable stories to support you in your journey toward becoming an integrated and graceful leader.

A Really Great Book of Quotes and Quips: Abraham Lincoln: Quotes, Quips, and Speeches

This little book is a great conversation piece and if you ever need a great quote, on almost anything, it’s in this small gift book! More than 140 years since his death, the enduring legacy of a great president, an American success story, and the celebrated leader of the Civil War continues. Abraham Lincoln: Quotes, Quips, and Speeches capture the essence of the sixteenth president. In addition to Lincoln’s own words.

I’m Loving this New LP from The Zac Brown Band:Stubborn Pride/Paradise Lost on Me

I’m a big Zac Brown fan and this short 5 song LP didn’t disappoint. If you like a little kick in your driving music, you’ll love this upbeat collection of songs featuring Marcus King.

A Powerful Quote from James Clear

“You can usually accomplish more by giving something your full effort for a few years rather than giving it a lukewarm effort for fifty years. Pick a priority for this season of your life and do it to the best of your ability.”

AMust If You Love Pie! Southern Baked Pie Company:

Whatever you do, get a French Coconut Custard Pie! This is the most unbelievable pie you’ve ever tasted!! And the Chicken Pot Pie will bless your dinner situation. Should you be a fan of Pecan Pie, just dig in. It is so good. Don’t live in the area? Have them ship it to you!!

An Incredibly Timely Article from Stephen Guise-Curiosity

I loved this article. Here’s a brief excerpt: “If you wanted, you could make life seem bland. All you’d have to do is stop being curious. Stop wondering how couches are made, why wind exists, how someone would react if you told them you’re a penguin. Of course, if you wanted to make your life exciting and interesting, you’d do the opposite. You’d wonder endlessly. You’d always be curious. Curiosity is one of the few things that’s a simple yes/no choice. Nobody can stop you from being curious. It doesn’t take much effort to be curious. And yet, being curious is intensely rewarding.”

This is a Must Read Article if You Have Teenage Children or Grandchildren: How Anxiety Affects Teenagers

America is on the front edge of a tsunami-sized crisis with our children and our adolescent learners. If you are a parent or a grandparent, I urge you to read this article. Here is a brief excerpt: “There is substantial evidence that the pandemic has increased the number of adolescents (and even some pre-adolescents) who are anxious. It’s no wonder, given that Covid lockdowns and distancing robbed teenagers of many of the activities they care about most, disrupted their education, and isolated them from their friends.”

A Netflix Show that was So Good and Odd: HEIST; The Bourbon King

Jenny and I recently visited Kentucky and had such a great time with her family in Owensboro. While there, we heard the story of the Great Pappy VanWinkle Heist. After watching the show and seeing some of the same country we had just visited, it was so much fun. The story, a true story is fascinating!

A Powerful Quote from Henry Blackaby

“Stay faithful to the last word you heard from God but open to the next.” “For you to do the will of God, you must adjust your life to him, his purposes, and his ways.”

Happy Independence Day

A Book that Leaders Should Read:
Rumsfeld’s Rules

I read this book for the first time in 2000, and it had a significant impact on my life and leadership. I didn’t always agree with Mr. Rumsfeld, but this writing had a powerful impact on my leadership in both what and what not to do.

A Fun Novel from David Baldacci: The Innocent, a Will Robbie Novel

As every Baldacci novel that I have read, The Innocent is fast paced and full of surprises. If you like a little bit of spy intrigue, you’ll like this fun read.

A Blog Post that I found Very Interesting from Dr. Jim Denison:

Dr. Denison is one of my favorite authors. He has such a gift for rising above the clutter of cultural assessments and share biblical wisdom in love.

A Wonderful Series on Netional Geographic, Prime, and HULU: Genius, Einstein

Oh my! This shocked me at how interesting Einstein’s life is portrayed. I have also been reading the book this series was based on. It is apparently true to the life of this brilliant, odd man. Not designed for kids!

A Powerful Quote from Donald Rumsfeld

“There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know.”

A Really Great Restaurant Experience: Restaurant 2 – 4 – 6 in Decatur, GA

Jenny and I ate here before visiting the Van Gogh Experience. The food was terrific, and the service was even better. We shared a spinach salad with a vinaigrette dressing and parmesan – so good! We then enjoyed Chicken Marsala for 2. It was amazing. We were far too full for dessert but brought enough home for another full meal!

A Most Intriguing Audible Book: The Return of the Prodigal Son

This is so good. Henri Nouwen writes with such a fresh passion regarding Rembrandt’s Prodigal Son. I have found myself replaying thought after thought as Nouwen unpacks unique perspectives about this parable that Jesus shared.

A Wonderful Movie Starring Dennis Quaid: Blue Miracle

Based on a true story, this movie is light-hearted, encouraging, clean, and fun. I found myself tearing up a bit as the story was beautifully portrayed. A washed-up fisherman has to pair up with a man that runs a bankrupt orphanage to fish in one of the world’s most prestigious tournaments.

My New Favorite Store and Mexican Food: Guadalajara Supermercado in Norcross, GA

No website, excellent service. Fresh fruits and veggies. But the big find is the taqueria in the back of the store. Best tacos I’ve ever eaten!
5505 Buford Highway in Norcross, GA

A Wonderful Quote from
Antoine de Saint-Exupery

“True love is inexhaustible. The more you give, the more you have. And if you go to draw at the true fountainhead, the more water you draw, the more abundant is its flow.”

A Brief, but Awesome 40-Day Devotional: The Chosen; 40-Days with Jesus

It’s short, poignant, challenging and well prepared. This brief 40-day devotional from The Chosen is designed for folks that are in a hurry, but want to have a brief time of spiritual growth and grounding in their lives. But it’s not watered down. The book itself can easily be placed in a bag or pocket, and the devotion can be done in 4 minutes, easily. I think you’ll dig it…really!

An App and Reminder of The Chosen

This series is so entertaining, and so encouraging. I absolutely love the characters and the quality. In the app, you can view every episode from seasons one and two. It also has products that I am enjoying (see above). I urge you to watch this show and any of the outtakes on YouTube.

A Solid Business Read: The Culture Quotient by Gregory Besner

I really enjoyed this book. It was challenging, but super practical. If you are a entrepreneur, CEO, or a business leader, read this book. Amazon says: “Based on never-before-shared insights from more than 1,000 organizations and millions of employees, this insightful book reveals the ten essential culture qualities that can help any organization prepare for, and thrive in a constantly changing future.”

A Great Low-Carb, Keto Friendly Breakfast or Snack: Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage Bites

If you are looking for a delicious way to eat low-carb, keto friendly snacks, or even a breakfast option, these are filling and delicious! I love the turkey sausage, but the regular sausage is great as well. Just pop them in the microwave for about 65 seconds and boom! You’ve low-carb deliciousness!

A Quote from Author St. Francis of Assisi :

“It was easy to love God in all that was beautiful.
The lessons of deeper knowledge, though, instructed me
to embrace God in all things..”
